Transfer Cues: cue your dog in unimaginable ways

Transfer cues!

(Instruction video below)

Requirement: That your dog knows one cue really well and reliably!

Imagine if you could teach your pup some cues that are not obvious to anyone. That are invisible to anyone watching you. That means, the way you cue a behavior to your dog is not what people usually do. Transfer cues works like this. Let’s say you usually say DOWN but now you would like heavy breathing to be a cue to lie down. You jus have to follow an easy recipe:

New Cue -> Old Cue

New Cue -> wait 1 sec -> Old Cue (mark yes and treat)

New Cue -> wait 2 sec -> Old Cue (mark yes and treat)

New Cue -> wait 3 sec -> Old Cue (mark yes and treat)

New Cue -> wait for your dog to anticipate and do the behavior! When she does it.. mark yes and treat! Congratulations, you did it!

Let me give some examples of its uses:

  • you touch the door knob of your exit door as a cue for your dog to auto sit

  • you bend down as a cue to auto down

  • smell of food as a cue to your dog to go to the mat without you saying a thing

  • you open the car door as a cue for your dog to auto stay and wait to be released

There are a lot of very practical uses for transfer cues!

And here the video!
